South Dakota has no operator licence, charges $140 a year for a food service licence — $70 if taken out from 1 July — and requires a sales tax licence for each location a machine stands in. Nothing is on the record here, and PinPoint Vending states coverage of every state but Alaska and Hawaii.

Who places cotton candy machines in South Dakota?
Nobody, on the public record. South Dakota appears in none of the 87 placements on the October 5, 2026 record, spread over 29 states — and neither does any state bordering it. North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana are all blank, which makes South Dakota one of three states in the record with six empty neighbours.
Wisconsin is the nearest state with anything: seven placements, six at 40% of net and one bowling alley at 30%, across venue types from a water park to a campground. Kansas adds two, including the record’s only destination venue at 50%.
If a South Dakota site needs snacks and drinks too, that work goes to Nationwide Vending Locators, charged per location at installation.
Two filing quirks that reward planning the route first
South Dakota’s charges are structured around locations and timing rather than machines, which is unusual in this series.
| Charge | Basis | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Sales tax licence | Per location where machines stand | Per venue |
| Food service licence | Per establishment with no seating | $140 a year |
| The same, from 1 July | Prorated | $70 |
The per-location sales tax licence is the one no other state in this series imposes. A five-venue South Dakota route means five separate tax licences — small money and real administrative time, and it means a route planned as “three venues in Sioux Falls” is cheaper to run than “one each in Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen”.
The 1 July halving is a straightforward saving on a first licence. An operator installing in autumn pays $70 for the remainder of the licence year where a spring installation pays $140 (South Dakota Department of Health). It is not a reason to delay a good placement; it is a reason to know which half of the year you are in before filing.
The climate is on your side
Floss sugar is hygroscopic: in South Dakota it takes up moisture from the air, turns tacky and slumps. Plains winters work against that: cold air holds very little water vapour, and heating it indoors reduces the relative humidity further, so a heated Sioux Falls building in January is close to ideal.
Summers on the eastern side of the state are humid enough to need attention through July and August; the western half, toward Rapid City and the Black Hills, is drier and higher. The South Dakota-relevant thresholds appear in what humidity does to a cotton candy machine.
What does a South Dakota placement leave the operator?
With no South Dakota share on record, plan South Dakota on the national median — an $8 serving at 40% of net leaves about $4.54.
| Share | Venue takes | Operator keeps per $8 serving |
|---|---|---|
| 30% (the Green Bay, Wisconsin figure) | $1.86 | $5.16 |
| 40% (national median, and six of Wisconsin’s seven) | $2.48 | $4.54 |
| 50% (the Lawrence, Kansas figure) | $3.10 | $3.92 |
Assumptions: $8 a serving; the venue’s percentage applied to net sales, which the agreements reach by deducting $1.80 first; $0.50 for sugar, stick and topping; card processing at 5.95%, or $0.48. The monthly placement fee, the licences, insurance, travel and the machine payment sit outside the table.
Travel is the South Dakota line that no national figure carries. Sioux Falls to Rapid City is roughly 350 miles, which is a different service proposition from a thirty-mile pair in upstate South Carolina — so the route should be built inside one metro before it stretches across the state. What a cotton candy machine earns runs the annual version.
Where would a machine sign in South Dakota first?
In Sioux Falls, and probably more than once. The city holds bowling alleys, trampoline parks and indoor playgrounds — three of the four categories supplying 44 of the 87 national placements — and clustering two or three machines there avoids both the long drive and a second sales tax licence.
Rapid City is the other anchor, with the Black Hills tourist season behind it, and Aberdeen and Brookings are route extensions rather than foundations.
Lead with Wisconsin’s record when you pitch, since South Dakota has none of its own: six of seven venues at 40% of net, in categories from a bowling alley to a campground. How to pitch a cotton candy machine covers making the case without a local comparison, and cotton candy placement state by state shows how South Dakota compares with the states that have listings.
Frequently asked questions
Who places cotton candy vending machines in South Dakota?
PinPoint Vending states coverage of every state except Alaska and Hawaii, but has no signed South Dakota venue in the October 2026 record. All six bordering states are empty too.
What does a South Dakota machine cost to licence?
There is no vending operator licence. A food service licence runs $140 a year for an establishment with no seating, halved to $70 for a licence taken out from 1 July, and each location needs its own sales tax licence.
Why does the 1 July date matter?
Because it halves the food licence. A licence taken out from 1 July costs $70 rather than $140, so an autumn installation is cheaper to licence than a spring one.
Is South Dakota a good climate for floss sugar?
Among the best. Spun sugar collapses when it absorbs moisture, and plains winters are dry — cold air holds little water and heating it indoors dries it further.
What share should a South Dakota venue expect?
There is no South Dakota figure. The national median is 40% of net, and the nearest signed deals are Wisconsin’s seven, six of them at 40%.
