North Carolina is, on paper, the cheapest state in this series to run a machine in: no vending licence, no decal, and its single listing agreed 30% of net — the most favourable share any venue in the record accepted. The venue reports 27 visitors a day. PinPoint Vending placed it.

Who places cotton candy machines in North Carolina?

PinPoint Vending placed the state’s only recorded venue: an arcade in Wilmington, on the coast, signed July 23, 2026 at 30% of net on a sixteen-month minimum term.

The share is remarkable and the traffic is not. Of the 87 placements in the record, eleven agreed 30% of net and Wilmington is one of them — the best outcome available to an operator. Of the 69 placements reporting a visitor count, Wilmington’s 27 a day is among the five lowest; only a New Jersey gymnastics gym at three, a Kentucky indoor playground at nineteen, a Florida rage room at twenty-three and a Kentucky family entertainment centre at twenty-seven are at or below it.

If a North Carolina building also wants snacks and drinks, that is Nationwide Vending Locators territory, charging a North Carolina location when the machine is installed.

The best terms in the record, and why they are not enough

Thirty per cent of net leaves the operator about $5.16 of an $8 serving.

ShareVenue takesOperator keeps per $8 serving
30% (the Wilmington listing)$1.86$5.16
40% (national median)$2.48$4.54
50%$3.10$3.92

Assumptions: $8 a serving; the venue’s percentage applied to net sales, which the agreements reach by deducting $1.80 first; $0.50 for sugar, stick and topping; card processing at 5.95%, or $0.48. The monthly placement fee, insurance, travel and the machine payment sit outside the table — and in North Carolina there is no state licence to add, which is unusual.

Now set it against the volume. Ten thousand visitors a year at a 2% purchase rate is about 200 servings, or roughly $1,030 a year to the operator. A standard placement fee of $100 a month is $1,200 a year. The purchase rate is an assumption — no listing in this record reports sales — but the gap is wide enough that a more generous rate is needed before the machine covers its own fee, let alone the equipment.

So North Carolina’s record is the clearest demonstration in this series that the share is the last thing to optimise. The state gives an operator the best percentage and the lowest licensing cost available anywhere, and the placement still does not work, because 27 visitors a day is 27 visitors a day.

Coastal humidity is the second problem

Spun sugar is hygroscopic, and in North Carolina as in every state here it absorbs airborne moisture, turns sticky and slumps. Wilmington sits on the Atlantic coast with a long humid summer, which is close to the hardest environment this machine meets outside the Gulf states.

The thresholds are in what humidity does to a cotton candy machine. The practical North Carolina reading is that the coastal plain and the Piedmont are different propositions: Charlotte, Greensboro and the Triad sit higher and drier than Wilmington, and a machine there faces a materially easier year.

What a North Carolina operator actually gets from the state

Very little cost, which is worth quantifying because most states in this series charge something.

StateAnnual state cost per machine
New Hampshire$350, Class C food service licence
Nevada$200 state business licence, or $500 as a corporation
Maine$105 for the whole company
Montana$85, priced by staffing
North Dakota$40 a machine, plus $100 on an initial application
Minnesota$25 a machine
North CarolinaNothing

Local health permitting still varies by county and is worth establishing by address, and the state’s business opportunity statute is strict on sellers — a $250 Secretary of State filing is required before advertising, at any price. But the machine itself carries no state charge.

Where would a better North Carolina placement be?

In a metro, and in a measurable category. North Carolina’s record holds one arcade; arcades appear four times nationally and have no published average visit length, so Wilmington cannot be converted into hours of exposure at all.

Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro and Winston-Salem hold the four categories North Carolina lacks, which carry 44 of the 87 placements: family entertainment centres, bowling alleys, trampoline parks and indoor playgrounds and all of the state records that can be ranked. Any one of them would be both a better placement and a better data point.

Lead with the share rather than the venue when you pitch, carefully: Wilmington establishes that a North Carolina venue has accepted 30%, which is useful to an operator and not something a strong venue will accept. How to pitch a cotton candy machine covers which fact to lead with, and cotton candy placement state by state shows how little a single listing supports.

Frequently asked questions

Who places cotton candy vending machines in North Carolina?

PinPoint Vending, which has one North Carolina placement on the record: an arcade in Wilmington signed July 23, 2026 at 30% of net, reporting 10,000 visitors a year.

What does a cotton candy machine cost to licence in North Carolina?

Nothing at state level. North Carolina requires no vending licence and no decal, which makes it the lightest state in this series on the machine itself.

Is 30% of net good for an operator?

It is the best share in the record — the operator keeps about $5.16 of an $8 serving against $4.54 at the 40% median. On 27 visitors a day it is still not enough.

Is North Carolina’s climate difficult for floss sugar?

On the coast, yes. Spun sugar absorbs moisture and collapses, and Wilmington is humid through a long summer. The Piedmont is easier than the coastal plain.

Where would a better North Carolina placement be?

In the Charlotte, Raleigh or Greensboro metros, and in a category the dataset can measure. Bowling alleys, trampoline parks and indoor playgrounds supply 40 of the 87 national placements and none of North Carolina’s.

Next step

Work out the venue’s annual servings before you celebrate a 30% share, because North Carolina’s one listing has the best terms in the record and roughly 10,000 visitors a year — which at any plausible purchase rate struggles to cover a $1,200 annual placement fee. Then compare the coastal plain against the Piedmont, since Wilmington’s humidity is a cost that Charlotte’s is not.
