# Outdoor cotton candy vending machine: when a water park works

> Spun sugar collapses within hours in humid air, and the pool deck is the most humid spot in the park. Here is where a machine can still work.

An outdoor cotton candy vending machine works only under a roof, out of splash range, on a ground-fault-protected outlet, and in air dry enough to keep floss sugar loose. One manufacturer rates its machine for indoor use and calls for a canopy outside. At a water park, the dry lobby or arcade beats the pool deck.

## Can a cotton candy vending machine run outdoors?

A cotton candy vending machine can run outdoors only with the protection its maker specifies, and some makers say plainly that their machine is built for indoors. Intermatic's manual for its IML CFV 04 cotton candy vendor says the machine is designed for indoor use. Outside, it needs a customized canopy and a ground-fault-protected outlet, and at night it should come indoors or go under an insulated wrap against condensation.

The same [Intermatic manual](https://www.bmigaming.com/Games/Manuals/sega/cotton-candy-floss-cotton-candy-vending-machine-users-manual-sega.pdf) adds two limits that matter outdoors: a power cord of no more than 10 feet, and a cooling program for machines where temperatures stay above 80°F for long periods. The manual is from 2010, but the physics of sugar and water have not changed.

Read your own machine's manual for the same three things: an indoor-use line, an outlet requirement and an operating temperature or humidity range. If the manual gives no humidity range, ask the manufacturer in writing before you sign anywhere outdoors.

## Why does humidity matter so much for an outdoor machine?

Humidity matters because cotton candy is sugar in a glassy, unstable form that pulls water from the air and collapses. Food scientists Leinen and Labuza, summarizing a 2004 storage study by Labuza and Labuza, report that pure-sucrose cotton candy stayed amorphous for two years or more at 11% relative humidity. At 33% it collapsed and crystallized within 3 days, at 45% within 6 hours and at 75% within about 1 hour ([Journal of Zhejiang University Science B](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1363750)).

At the weather stations nearest the two marketplace water parks, summer air sits well above those levels. NOAA's [comparative climatic data](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/land-based-station/comparative-climatic-data), in its current edition with records through 2023, gives average morning and afternoon relative humidity by month:

| Station | July morning | July afternoon | August morning | August afternoon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nashville, TN (near the Hermitage listing) | 87% | 56% | 89% | 55% |
| Madison, WI (nearest listed station to Wisconsin Dells) | 85% | 56% | 89% | 59% |
| Orlando, FL | 90% | 59% | 91% | 61% |
| Phoenix, AZ | 42% | 21% | 47% | 24% |

A served cone only has to survive the walk to a towel, but the sugar in the hopper and the floss forming in the bowl live in that air all day. Intermatic's manual tells operators to keep hopper sugar completely dry and free of lumps, and lists lumpy sugar among the causes of undersized servings. Gold Medal, a maker of commercial floss machines, tells operators that floss comes out too heavy when room humidity runs high ([Gold Medal Products](https://www.gmpopcorn.com/resources/how-tos/how-to-make-cotton-candy-2)).

Phoenix shows the other side of the trade: dry enough on paper, but a machine there swaps a humidity problem for a heat problem. Our [humidity guide](https://locationsforcottoncandy.com/cotton-candy-machine-humidity/) covers indoor targets in detail.

## Is an indoor water park dry enough for a cotton candy machine?

An indoor water park's pool hall is not dry enough for a cotton candy machine, and the health code assumes as much. The CDC's 2024 [Model Aquatic Health Code](https://www.cdc.gov/model-aquatic-health-code/media/pdfs/2024/11/5th-Ed-MAHC-Code-508.pdf) tells designers to build the interior finishes of an indoor aquatic facility for indoor relative humidity of not less than 80%. Put the machine in the lobby, the arcade or the hotel corridor, on the dry side of the doors.

That distinction matters most in Wisconsin Dells, home of one of the two marketplace water parks. The local visitors bureau credits the Polynesian Water Park Resort with introducing the indoor water park in 1989, and the area now counts more than 220 waterslides ([Wisconsin Dells Visitor and Convention Bureau](https://wisdells.com/Media/Facts-and-Figures/Waterpark-Capital-Credentials)). A park there can mean an indoor park attached to a hotel, an outdoor park, or both.

An indoor park attached to a hotel gives a machine the most to work with: year-round families and a dry lobby. Our guide to a [cotton candy machine in a hotel lobby](https://locationsforcottoncandy.com/cotton-candy-machine-hotel/) covers how to judge the hotel side of the building.

## What three conditions make an outdoor placement work?

Three conditions make an outdoor cotton candy placement work: a roof and walls that keep rain and splash off the machine, air that stays reasonably dry through the selling hours, and power from a ground-fault-protected outlet within cord reach. Miss any one of the three and the machine spends its season faulting, clumping or switched off, which costs more than the placement itself.

**Field Notes: checking an outdoor spot**

1. Check the cover. Stand at the spot during a storm or a wave-pool cycle; if spray or blown rain reaches it, the spot fails. The [FDA Food Code](https://www.fda.gov/media/194741/download) also requires overhead protection for a food vending machine located outside (section 6-202.17); the [cotton candy vending machine permit](https://locationsforcottoncandy.com/cotton-candy-vending-machine-permit/) guide covers the rest of the inspection.
2. Check the air. Look up the nearest NOAA station; if summer afternoons average above 45% relative humidity, the level at which that 2004 study saw collapse within hours, plan on an enclosed room rather than a canopy.
3. Check the power. Ask the park's electrician for a ground-fault-protected outlet within 10 feet; pool areas carry extra wiring rules under the National Electrical Code, which the CDC code cites as a reference standard.
4. Settle the night. Agree where the machine goes after closing, since the Intermatic manual calls for an insulated wrap or a move indoors against condensation.
5. Settle the sun. Ask whether the spot sits in afternoon sun, since the same manual adds a cooling program for long stretches above 80°F.

Steps four and five are not conditions so much as costs: they decide how much of your time an outdoor spot eats each week. Run the result through [the 11 location requirements](https://locationsforcottoncandy.com/cotton-candy-machine-location-requirements/) before you sign.

## How does a short season change the math?

A short outdoor season changes the math through the calendar more than through the placement fee. Every marketplace listing carries a 16-month minimum term, and both water parks charge $200 a month, so the fee totals $3,200 over the term. Spread across two 100-day summers, that is $16 for each day the park is open.

The bigger cost is a machine that sits idle, or faults in wet air, on the days the park is open.

Visitor counts need the same correction. The daily figure on each listing divides annual visitors by 365, so a park reporting 260,000 a year shows about 710 a day. If that park opens about 100 days a year, it sees closer to 2,600 on an open day.

**The Math** (illustration, not a forecast)

Assumptions: an outdoor-only park open 100 days a year, roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the house figures: an $8 serving, minus the venue's 40% of net sales after the $1.80 cost-of-goods deduction in the host agreements ($2.48), about $0.50 of sugar, stick and topping, and card fees at 5.95% ($0.48), leaves the operator about $4.54. The listings do not say whether either park is indoor or outdoor.

| | Hermitage, TN listing | Wisconsin Dells, WI listing |
|---|---|---|
| Annual visitors, venue-reported | 260,000 | 175,000 |
| Daily figure on the listing (annual ÷ 365) | About 710 | About 480 |
| Visitors per open day, if open 100 days | 2,600 | 1,750 |
| Placement fee per open day, two seasons in the term | $16 | $16 |
| Servings per open day to cover the fee | About 3.6 | About 3.6 |
| Same, if only one 100-day season falls in the term | About 7.1 | About 7.1 |

Ask in writing what happens to the machine and to the monthly fee during the months the park is closed. Our [seasonality guide](https://locationsforcottoncandy.com/cotton-candy-machine-seasonality/) covers how sales move through the year at different venue types.

## What do the two water parks in the marketplace data tell you?

The two water parks in the marketplace data show big traffic on familiar terms, and a listing that leaves out the one fact that matters most. A park in Hermitage, Tennessee reports 260,000 visitors a year and one in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin reports 175,000. Both set 40% of net sales, both carry the Premium $2,000 enrollment and $200 monthly fee, and neither says indoor or outdoor.

In the marketplace data, the Premium terms go only to the 22 listings reporting at least 100,000 visitors a year, and $1,600 of the $2,000 is a refundable deposit. Both listings put day-to-day cleaning on the venue under the host agreement, and both pair the cotton candy slot with a drink-and-snack machine; the Wisconsin Dells agreement also lists a collectible machine. Ask each park three things: is the slot indoors, which building is it in, and is that building open in January?

Outdoor ballparks raise the same questions with a shorter calendar, covered in our guide to a [cotton candy machine at a ballpark](https://locationsforcottoncandy.com/cotton-candy-robot-stadium/).

## Should you take a cotton candy robot to outdoor events?

A cotton candy robot is the wrong machine for one-day outdoor events. The Intermatic vendor weighs 463 pounds installed and needs a level, stable floor and a protected outlet. Its manual also says to empty and refill the sugar hopper after any move with sugar inside, because the sugar compacts.

Fairs and festivals reward a staffed floss machine that packs into a van; a robot earns its keep by staying put in a dry building that families visit every week. If an event organizer asks, the honest answer is a referral to a staffed concession, or an offer to place the robot in the venue's permanent building instead.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a cotton candy machine be used outside?

Only with protection: a roof, shelter from rain and splash, a ground-fault-protected outlet and a plan for overnight condensation. At least one manufacturer, Intermatic, rates its cotton candy vendor for indoor use and lists those steps for running it outdoors.

### Does humidity ruin cotton candy?

Yes, and fast outdoors. In a 2004 storage study by Labuza and Labuza, summarized by food scientists Leinen and Labuza, pure-sucrose cotton candy collapsed and crystallized within about 6 hours at 45% relative humidity and about 1 hour at 75%, while it lasted two years or more at 11%. July mornings average 85% or more at the weather stations nearest both marketplace water parks.

### Do water parks have cotton candy vending machines?

Some sign them: two water parks among the open marketplace listings of October 2026 offer a cotton candy slot at 40% of net sales. The best spot at any water park is the dry entry building or arcade, not the pool deck.

### Where is the best place for a cotton candy machine at a water park?

The dry, enclosed part of the park: the entry building, the arcade, the hotel corridor of an indoor park or a walled food court. The pool deck is the worst choice, because the CDC's model aquatic code has indoor pool-hall finishes designed for relative humidity of 80% or more.

## Next step

Before you sign any water park, ask for the exact spot in writing and stand there on a humid afternoon; if the air feels damp or the floor is wet, keep looking. [PinPoint Vending's listing for a water park in Wisconsin Dells](https://pinpoint-vending.com/marketplace/water-park-wisconsin-dells-wi-l03061) shows the terms a deal like this carries; if you enroll through the company, ask which building the slot is in first.

## Corrections

- Correction, October 5, 2026: An earlier version treated the $1.80 cost-of-goods deduction in the host agreements as the operator’s actual cost and left out card fees, giving $3.72 a serving at a 40% share and about 4.3 servings per open day to cover the placement fee. At the house inputs the operator keeps about $4.54, so the fee takes about 3.6 servings per open day, or about 7.1 if only one season falls in the term.
